Lodi Unified’s Middle College victorious at academic decathlon

  • STOCKTON — Lodi Unified School District’s Middle College High School was recognized as the top overall school during the 43rd Annual Academic Decathlon on Saturday.

    Students from 13 high schools throughout San Joaquin County participated in the decathlon, held by the San Joaquin County Office of Education.

    The competition began on Dec. 7 with the virtual essay events, and continued on Jan. 19, with the speech and interview events held at the SJCOE in Stockton.

    Decathlon moved to Lathrop High School on Saturday, where competitors showcased their knowledge of art, economics, literature, mathematics, music, science, and social science in a series of objective tests, culminating in the high-energy Super Quiz competition and awards ceremony.

    Each year, all the decathlon events are tied together with a single theme, and this year’s was Technology and Humanity.

    Each nine-member team consists of three students in each of three categories based on grade point average

    Honors teams have grade point averages of 3.75 or more, scholastic teams have GPAs of 3.0 to 3.74, and varsity teams have GPAs of 2.99 or less.

    In being recognized as the top overall school, Middle College received the Dave Sorgent Winner’s Cup and will compete in the State Academic Decathlon Championship.

  • The school also placed first in the Super Quiz teams competition.

    McNair High school placed second overall, and placed third in the Super Quiz team competition.

    Middle College students Jaida Gao and Julia Yang placed second and third, respectively, as top overall students in the Honors Division I competition.

    Gao received a $100 scholarship and Yang received $50.

    In the Scholastic division, Paulina Munoz placed third and will receive a $50 scholarship.

    Mylan Tran and Aubrey Gasmen-Bohnak placed second and third, respectively, in the Varsity division. Tran will receive a $100 scholarship and Gasmen-Bohnak will receive $50.

    McNair students Cielo Ramirez and Andres Nieto placed second and third, respectively, in the Scholastic Division II competition, and will receive $100 and $50.

    Brian Thao placed first in the Scholastic competition and will receive a $250 scholarship.
